Of the just over one million hectares of land area in Jamaica, since 1952 only about 7,400 hectares, or less than 0.75 per cent has been disturbed for bauxite mining. "We have restored a little over 4,000 hectares.the important thing is to try to accelerate the process of restoration, so that the lands can be put to use," Dr. Davis says.
