The origin of gypsum, its genesis, varieties and properties are discussed, and the focus is then on the most common binding material produced from it, plaster of Paris (β-hemihydrate), known in France as 'plâtre de Paris', in the USA as 'calcined gypsum', and in Germany as 'Stuckgips'.

Admixtures: These are the chemical compounds used for improving the characteristics of concrete such as workability, setting etc. with out affecting the strength of the concrete Types: Retarders delays the setting of cement particularly in hot climates for certain minimum time. Gypsum is one such compounds. Accelerators accelerates the setting process particularly in cold climates.

Life cycle tools typically take two forms: They examine the financial life-cost of a material or system or appraise the environmental impact of a material or system. A life-cycle cost analysis evaluates the cost to produce a material or construct a system and the cost of maintaining and replacing the material .
